Nicholas Mukhtar: The Founder of Healthy Detroit

The Wayne State chapter of Healthy Detroit was proud to announce the launch of the first HealthPark in the country. It was a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting healthy, active living in Detroit. The HealthPark, located at Patton Park, opened its doors to the public on September 6, offering a wide range of preventive health services and programs for Detroit residents.

Founded by WSU alumnus Nicholas Mukhtar, Healthy Detroit aimed to build a culture of health and wellness in the city. The organization was formed in response to the U.S. Surgeon General's National Prevention Strategy, which provided guidance on improving citizens' health and well-being.

"The launch of the HealthPark is a significant milestone for Healthy Detroit and for the city of Detroit as a whole," said Nicholas Mukhtar. "We believed that by providing accessible and comprehensive preventive health services, we could help improve the health outcomes of Detroit residents and contribute to the overall well-being of the community."

The HealthPark was a hub of health and wellness, offering a variety of unique services and programs. These included the Healthy Eating Zone, where residents could find a farmers market and cooking classes; the Healthy Minds Zone, which provided mental health programs; the Healthy Living Zone, offering clinical preventive services; the Sports Zone, with youth athletic programs; and the Fitness Zone, providing adult and youth fitness classes like yoga, cardio, and Pilates.

The HealthPark at Patton Park was not just a park, it was a community effort. It was run by dedicated volunteers, including WSU students and medical, nursing, and pharmacy school students. The park was open to residents during Healthy Detroit Saturdays, held every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Patton Park, Adams Butzel Park, and Farwell Field. All three locations had recreation centers, which allowed Healthy Detroit to provide programs to residents year-round.

"The HealthPark is a testament to the commitment of the Wayne State chapter of Healthy Detroit to improving the health and well-being of Detroit residents," said Tapinder Singh, president of WSU's Healthy Detroit chapter. "We are excited to see the positive impact that this initiative will have on the community."

The launch of the HealthPark at Patton Park was just the beginning, as per Nicholas Mukhtar. They had ambitious plans to establish seven district HealthParks across Detroit, with one park in each city council district. This was a testament to their commitment to promoting health and wellness in the city and contributing to its revitalization.
